Its out and about. Everything seems ok other than a 20mph throttle hit on last years plugs in 3rd gear ...uh it loaded up.....
Now one trip to the track on gas, then the big switch....

Well..made to the track, but not good results...I have a problem that has erupted since last time out last year, but couldnt find it yesterday...so no E85 switch yet for me. I have to find the problem b4 I switch. Brett however, layed the smack down yesterday, but Ill let him tell it from the "helmet cam". I neve made more than a 300' run and I use the term RUN loosely.
Nothing changed in the tuneup over the winter, but now it wont RPM or do anything. I either have an ignition problem or the carb gumed up over winter OR I hurt it on the last pass last year and dont know it. I guess I have to clean out the carb, run a leakdown and go back.
This year aint starting off where it was supposed to, which was on a good note from the end of last year.....

Can you find everything wrong here?!?!? LOL
OK looking for the internet sugestions on where to look for my "rpm climbs, starts to mis b4 shift light or rev limiter, I go ahead and shift, it goes into COMPLETE miss firing" situation. Again keep in mind, NOTHING was touched as far as tune up goes form last year....lets hear the thoughts.....maybe one of them will lead me to the problem.....

Well that one of the ONLY things other than converter that I changed over the winter.......it may have to go!!!! j/k
Not that I was asking for a diagnosis fromthe vid on my car....as far as the PM, I will check that just incase.

lead fouled spark plugs from not enough compression....bad coil wire...wrong color engine paint?
I run unleaded
yes I have no compression lol (other than what int the bottle)
checked the coil wire....all is good (however I do have one plug wire that was about 15ohms higher than expected but still close to norm, also a couple had some hot spots on the heat shields, but not through them... Going to reroute them and see if anything is different.
leakdown showed all is within a 10-18% range on a cold engine
and as far as paint goes....its the wrong color for everyone but ME...lol
One thing i did run across it looks like the coil may have "shifted" location and had a possibility of somethign going on after launch, but no actual signs of it.....TBD
Took carb apart to blow all passages out incase of winter fuel gumming it up.
Going to reset the crank trigger gap to just incase (even though NONE of this changed since last year)
So all in all a few small things, but nothign that was a clear THAT'S IT. Nothign major mechanically internal so I was happy with that!

when was the last time u changed or check ur valve springs?

Yea thats another check I am planning, but they were new last year and not that many runs on them, BUT its not hard to check em so thats coming....I need an "on the head" checker....but ill tame em off if I need to. I really dont think they are the cause but Ill never rule anything out before knowing!!!!
Plus the last 3 runs last year were best runs ever n/a and spray.....
Thanks for the suggestins so far!....one of those the more brains the better.....sometimes the obvious doesnt jump out and I dont have time to miss anything!!!!

Well looks like ONE or more of the above things took care of it. I am leanign towards some passages in the carb being gummed up fromthe pump gas sitting over the winter. Yes I ran it dry b4 putting it up, but didnt do due diligence in takign it apart and making sure it was dried out.....
Drove it last night. Does rpm a bit slower due t converter hitting much sooner but it was skating around rather than stumbling all over itself like after a long night at the bar....

Well it seems I too have developed a problem with my junk over the winter, I guess landing a car on it's side at 110+ MPH is a bad thing for it. As it stands right now my junk won't rev past 65-6800 RPM just breaks up real bad like it hits the limiter but the limiter is set nowhere near there. I will be pulling the carb apart tomorrow also and blowing through it. What RPM did yours break up at?? I am very curious as Im not the only person I know having this exact same issue but the other guy just doesn't drive his car to figure it out.

At this point George I am listening to everything and checking it all twice. This kind of stuff drives me crazy ( so it's a short trip) and I hate it.

OK latest report...had it back at the track yesterday....better but still problems. Now it seems to try to run decent through 1st then right before shift (~7k) is starts a wierd small miss, then shift and it stays through 2nd and into what little of 3rd i use N/A on 1/8 mile. Lost .4 and 7mph over last year. I would assume the short time may fall off just a tad with tightening up the converter, but not 0.1-0.12, but expected the MPH to maybe pick up....
Its drastically better than last week, so I found something, not sure what cuz Im like PumpGas....went over everything twice and not sure what I changed for the positive. I am going to go through the carb AGAIN, but let it soak in the chem dip longer this time. The only thing I didnt soak was the bowl and needle and seat (did check them visually though). Never took off the line fittings either.
I do TRULY appreciate the discussion and ideas (keep more coming), cuz I am not sure where to go next. I think ill borrow a coil (mine has been on 8 yrs) try it, go throught e carb again and try it, AND test some valve springs even though I haved trouble believing thats it, but I cant rule anything out.

OK...here we go again...went through carb.....totaly this time. Last time I did not take out all the little MFn emulssion jets and crap from the metering blocks....this time i did. Also I let it soak for 4 hours this time (which took paint off the throttle shafts....guess that why they said 15 mintes). Also replaced metering gaskets. My old man (ex racer) said he used to HAVE to replace them ecery year and it was nigth and day. My response was the new gaskets these days are much better..and they are, but ya know what, just incase I changed em this time. Th eold ones were swollen and had some "corrosion" look to em. Also rpelace bowl gaskets since they leaked down over Sunday in the trailer.
Also going to swap coils and re-route the crank trigger harness to remove the possibility of "current creating current" and triggering the system to fire.
After that Ill check the springs. They only got maybe 15 runs on em.

Mike what box is it?? I had a problem years back in my camaro..would leave hard right about the shift it would break up almost all the way through 2ns then in to third a lil then pull like nuts...had it back to msd 3 times they said it was fine "they either work or dont"..a buddy gave me his box to try...vola!! problem gone...
High Roller
05-03-2009, 08:08 PM
Well that will make me sick since it was fine last time out last year. Plus initially my problem was MUCH earlier and with some of the small changes it now went to end of 1st gear on...mine never comes back.
My plan WAS so perfect. No changes over winter, come out early this year, run once on gas to compar converter changes, change to the moonshine, and be tuned early and one of the first to do so.
Today proved to be yet another monkey wrench. Tried to go one more time on gas. Go to the track and they canceled the day of racing!!! AFTER 2 DAYS OF SUN!!!! So I am not sure if my changes fixed it this time or not.
SOOOOOOO I dont have any choice but to convert, so after returning from our wasted trip, I took care of the yard, then swapped the parts out and she now burns the moonshine. Seems to like it, and I am hoping what everyone learned from yesterday, I can gleen from it and be close right off the trailer (problem still pending).
Now I have to figure out when to test between now an the 16th enough to get a hold of it N/A AND the spray.......I am afraid the 16th may end up a TnT for me....but Ill be there to support it!!!!! I REALLY wish I'd been there yesterday NOW!!!!! Yes I am salty now!!!!

Well if Duane can make it happen I'd like to go back to the track next Sat as mine will have the new carb on it and hopefully a new ignition as the 6AL-2 stuff just isn't seeming to work out for me. :( Im just gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a Digital 7 and a new coil (fingures crossed), but I have to waite to send these (2) 6AL-2 boxes back before getting any new parts......:( (funds are running thin) No matter what it will be running N/A mid week and making test passes this weekend, if those go well might step it up to the N2O also.

Not sure if it is fixed or not. Took it for a drive last night burning the 'shine. Seesm to be totally different, but I only ran it up to 6-6500 in high gear from about 30mph. Once it cleaned out and got into the rpm band it really seemed to pull, ignoring the skating around on the less than optimal traction conditions of illinois best.
Either way it seems to like the 'shine down low. Now I just need to prove out the upper rpm fix or not.

From my understanding Steve and Brett both had to up the jet size from what was suggested to them. Best bet would be to talk with them and try to get a few good rips on the street with it shutting it down pullen plugs and checking color. Also make darn good and sure your fuel pump is up to par and maintains fuel pressure as Brett was haven issues with that on Saturday. I have been able to do a lot of 1-2 gear pulls on the street with no issues shut it down pull plugs and tune from there. It def sucks but at this point it's all you have to tune with. One last thing to remember you can always lean it out but can't put the pistons back together after it goes lean and burns stuff up.

Can you pin point what was wrong or at least the last thing you changed?? I took my car out tonight (first time on E85) went ok but carb was WAY to lean (13.3 AFR) so with no Alchiy jets on hand loaded it up and headed home. I will take it out tomorrow and do a little "street" testing with it. It's easier to read plugs on the street and I can do longer AFR records on the street any ways.

Basically my own stupidity. I found a loose power connection...really loose that I overlooked many times.
As fas ar the AFR recording..I KNOW your stuff makes enough power to blow em off on the street so how are you going to measure full throttle/high load like you can at the track? Granted the time is shorter, but its not the same either. Just curious to compare notes as I will do the same.
What are you using to log/measure the AFR? I am using innovates LM1/wideband 02 and so far its givvin me weiord data. I havent d/l the data from friday night yet to see if it makes sense now that the power conncetions are good. I hope it is right so when I go to the pray i can be close early.
Jetting wise I am way higher than I expected, but it seemed to like it and want more, just like Steve and Brett.
We got plenty of extra jets now....lol....unless you need the size we are using!

Well I am not doing full blast from a dead stop I just roll into the throttle in 1st and hit it. I works rather good. To be honest I bet the jets Im using are way out of the ranger of what you guys use. It has 140 in it right now and may need a little more. Now that I got the AFR down in the neighborhood, now it needs to see the track again to check ET & MPH.
